SEPTEMBER 11, 1973: THE DAY SALVADOR ALLENDE DIED

“Luigi Laraia’s enthralling script blends the real words of Allende’s final public
address with retellings of true events and imagined stories.”

Award winning play, September 11, 1973: The Day Salvador Allende Died, by playwright, Luigi Laraia, has its UK Premiere in Edinburgh, Scotland at the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, August 17 to 25. The play premiered in Washington DC at the 2022 DC Capital Fringe Festival as a workshop production. It sold out all five of its performances and took home the “Best Drama” and “Best of Festival” awards.

September 11, 1973: The Day Salvador Allende Died focuses on the final hours in the Chilean President’s life. Despite a peaceful election several years earlier, a rebelling military is hell-bent on a coup. The chips are down and there is no time to spare. He anxiously considers his options. Suddenly a stranger in an elegant black suit appears. Allende is challenged to confront his choices and his legacy in the final chess game of his life.

Despite all its mythical reimagining and reinterpretations, the story of President Salvador Allende is still relevant. The play resonates in these turbulent times of heated divisions, where democracies everywhere are increasingly imperiled by rabid populism, falsehoods and the rejection of facts. Through the production of this theatrical piece, we do not wish to glorify Allende, his political ideals, or his government. We wish to reflect on why fighting for democratic values and institutions is important now and for future generations. Democracy is never a given and always in peril, especially when taken for granted. It does not take a dictator for democracy to crumble. Falsehoods, fanaticism, denigration of science, and excessive populism can all imperil and destroy democracy.
