Create, Educate, Celebrate

AN INVITATION

For the first time, the John F. Kennedy Center will host a celebration of the world’ s rivers with the city-wide RiverRun Festival in Washington, DC from April 3-16, 2023. Anchored on the Potomac River, the festival spotlights the cultures that rivers have spawned and their role as the life-sustaining arteries that connect our communities.

Potomac River Partners and the Kennedy Center bring together a collaboration of international environmental organizations, cultural institutions, artists and activists to focus on the critical role of water and rivers.

The festival offers unprecedented opportunities for local, national and international audiences to experience urgent messages about protecting the rivers, oceans and waters of the world for future generations.

Audiences will thrill to performances of hundreds of extraordinary talents locally and from around the world: musicians, actors, dancers, authors, filmmakers, chefs and visual artists, environmentalists and policy-makers.

These events will take place through the stages, grand halls and terraces of the Kennedy Center as well as the vibrant D.C. communities that link the Center to its own river, the Potomac.

In 1938, the Work Projects Administration (WPA) under the title, “Sunset Symphonies on the Potomac ” began a series of concerts performed by the National Symphony Orchestra anchored 30 feet out on a floating wharf. The audience sat on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. These free summer concerts delighted families and tourists alike until 1965.

The Potomac River Partners combines the legacy of these concerts not only with the Kennedy Center but also with the Watergate residences built on the banks of the Potomac River. This iconic architecture was named for the original “Watergate ” at Canal lock #1 where boats left the river and entered the C&O Canal.

OUR BLUE PLANET:
CELEBRATING EARTH AND ITS WATERS
